Attractive in its binding, and although the content is far from pristine, an unusual item acceptable for research purposes. Johannesburg 1936.
Includes photographs of the buildings then under construction for the planned Empire Exhibition at the end of 1936 on what was land owned by the Witwatersrand Agricultural Society. (See item in this catalogue by Thelma Gutsche on the WAS). Interesting photographs and advertisements both historical and contemporary.

The book is very well illustrated with photographs and provides an historical review of the city with reference to all of its attractions facilities, and institutions.

#16851 City of Johannesburg. THE PUBLIC LIBRARY AND MUSEUMS. Green & gilt insignia on cream wraps. English and Afrikaans texts, double ended. 4to. VG condition. Published 1935.
The library building then included the Africana and Geological Museums. As well as providing a history of the library leading to the construction of this building, a full architectural review is given with extensive photographs of both exterior & interior. The building was commenced in 1932 and construction commenced utilising an entirely white labour force. With solid bronze doors (The Birmingham Guild), teak and marble flooring and panelling, German silver door pulls (can they possibly still be there?), sculptures by M. Kottler, teak fanlight carvings by John Harcus, and ceramic plaques by the Ceramic Studio, this is an impressive building. Heating by metal ceiling panels, airconditioning and a centralised vacuum system meant that no expense was spared.

Photographs mostly around the turn of the century. Barnett had a studio in Johannesburg. The Star's Barnett collection consists of over 2000 photographs mainly covering early life in Johannesburg and taken in the period between the early 1890s and 1914. A good representative selection is featured in Vol.1. Vol.2 includes a section of Boer War pictures and others covering the whole country, even some of early Rhodesia.

Today, restored to its former glory at vast expense, the building is the seat of the Gauteng Provincial Legislature. Brenthurst is one of the few original homes from the turn of the century built by the early 'randlords' to have survived the ravages of the developers and exists in the original gardens as developed over the intervening years.

The architect was Francis Leonard Hodgson Fleming, born in Hampshire in 1875. He was a partner to Herbert Baker, and has over 80 churches in Southern Africa to his credit. The cathedral was commenced in 1919 and has yet to be finished.

Despite fierce opposition (and, strangely, considering the changes occuring in government policy at this late date), verkrampte forces in the Transvaal Dept. of Education closed down the school for lack of (white) pupils to fill it. Today's status unknown.

Pretoria fell to the British forces on June 5th 1900 without an armed struggle as Louis Botha strategically withdrew his forces to the east of the capital. The war continued without a shot bing fired in Pretoria until the Treaty of Vereeniging was signed in Melrose House there on 31st May 1902. This interesting item describes all the sites scattered across Pretoria where the various happenings and personages were located with a detailed location guide.

English & Afrikaans from alternate ends. Opened in 1935 the city hall was designed by architect J. Lockwood-Hall. An imposing building it houses a 4 console Cooper, Gill & Thompkins organ with 7000 wood, lead, & tin pipes. There is also a Deagan Tower Chime System 32 bell carillon. This latter was the only one installed outside of the USA and one of the few still fully functional.
