Looks at the buildings of Kruger's day and the men who built, lived, and worked in them. While not a definitive history of Pretoria, this volume provides a detailed overview of what in any case is a short history and which has not been superseded by any other text. Includes original colour photograph of the Dopper Church.

... Translated from the Dutch And Edited With Preface And Notes by Right Rev. J.W. Colenso. Cornelius Vijn was a young Hollander aged 23 who had been trading in Natal for more than 4 years. He personally handed his journal to Rev. John Colenso for consideration of publication in England at the time. More than half of this book is devoted to Colenso's Notes and, as well known, he was strongly against this war. Also includes notes on 'The Zulu Military System and 'A Protest Against The Zulu War' submitted by the Aborigines' Protection Society.

This first volume of the earlier 4-volume edition of Cory's work deals extensively with the history of the Eastern Cape. Starts with a brief introductory on the earlier history of the Cape leading up to the establishment of Graaff Reinet in 1786 from which date the Eastern Province is considered to have had official existence. Cory deals with subsequent events in the large drostdy that this covered in detail, including unrest in and around Graaff Reinet, Slagter's Nek, and The Battle Of Grahamstown.

He achieved much during his 11 years in Lesotho including the building of the Semonkong Methodist Hospital, new classrooms at Leribe and Maseru Primary schools, and the establishment of the Matsepe Vocational High School at Mafeteng.

Text in both the original Dutch and with a full English translation. Hendrik Cloete (1725-1799) was responsible for the development of the Groot Constantia estate and its tradition of fine wines.
